Health and Safety policy
Removal Van Battersea Health and Safety Policy
Removal Van Battersea is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, customers, contractors and members of the public. This Health and Safety Policy sets out the principles and procedures we follow to manage risks associated with domestic and commercial removals, loading and unloading, transportation, storage and related activities across our service areas.
Policy Aims and Objectives
The main aim of this policy is to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property during the course of our removal operations. We will identify, assess and control risks arising from our work, and continually improve our health and safety performance. All activities will be planned and carried out in a way that protects our teams, customers and anyone who may be affected by our work.
Management Responsibilities
Senior management at Removal Van Battersea has overall responsibility for health and safety. Management will ensure that adequate resources are provided for training, equipment, supervision and risk control. We will review this policy regularly to reflect changes in legislation, industry practice and the nature of our services.
Managers and supervisors are responsible for implementing this policy on a day-to-day basis. They must ensure that staff are properly instructed, that safe systems of work are followed, and that any hazards or incidents are reported and addressed promptly.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. All staff must:
Follow the training and instructions provided, use equipment safely and correctly, wear any required personal protective equipment, and report hazards, near misses and incidents immediately to their supervisor. Employees must not undertake any task for which they have not been trained or that they consider unsafe, and they are encouraged to raise safety concerns without fear of reprisal.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
We carry out risk assessments for our core activities, including packing, lifting, carrying, loading, unloading, driving, parking and operating in residential streets and commercial premises. These assessments identify potential hazards such as manual handling risks, slips and trips, working in confined spaces, vehicle movement, and work near the public.
Control measures are implemented to reduce risks so far as is reasonably practicable. This includes planning routes, using appropriate lifting techniques and equipment, assessing access at properties, and allocating sufficient time and staff to each job to avoid rushing or overexertion. Safe working practices are communicated to all employees and reviewed regularly.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a significant part of our work. We provide specific training on lifting and carrying techniques, team lifting procedures and the correct use of handling aids. Staff are required to assess the weight, size and shape of items before moving them and to request assistance or additional equipment when needed.
We use suitable trolleys, dollies, straps, ramps and protective materials to help move items safely and to protect floors, walls and fixtures at customer premises. Equipment is inspected regularly and removed from service if it is damaged or defective.
Vehicle Safety and Driving Standards
Our vehicles are maintained to a high standard and are inspected regularly to ensure they are roadworthy and fit for purpose. Drivers are required to carry out pre-use vehicle checks and to report any defects immediately. Loads must be secured correctly to prevent movement during transport and to protect both staff and other road users.
All drivers must hold the appropriate licence and follow safe driving practices, including adherence to speed limits, driving within hours regulations, maintaining safe distances and planning routes to minimise risk. Extra care is taken when operating in residential streets, near schools, busy commercial areas and shared access points.
Customer and Public Safety
We recognise our duty to protect customers and members of the public while we are working at or near their premises. Wherever reasonably possible, we will:
Plan access routes for carrying items, keep walkways clear, manage trip hazards from equipment and packaging, and avoid blocking entrances and emergency exits. When necessary, we will cordon off work areas or place clear visual warnings to alert people to moving vehicles, loading operations or other potential hazards.
Training, Information and Supervision
Removal Van Battersea provides induction and ongoing training to all staff appropriate to their role. Training covers topics such as health and safety awareness, manual handling, use of equipment, vehicle safety, working at customer premises, emergency procedures and incident reporting.
Information on safe working methods is provided through briefings, written instructions and on-the-job coaching. Supervisors monitor work practices to ensure that safety procedures are followed and provide additional guidance when necessary.
Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, incidents and near misses must be reported to management as soon as possible. We maintain a record of accidents and use this information to identify trends, review risk assessments and improve our safety measures.
Employees are trained in the basic actions to take in an emergency, including summoning medical assistance, securing the scene, and informing managers and, where appropriate, the authorities. First aid arrangements are provided in accordance with the size and nature of our operations.
Health, Welfare and Fitness for Work
We aim to protect the long-term health and welfare of our staff. Employees are encouraged to report any health issues that may affect their ability to perform removal tasks safely. We will consider reasonable adjustments to duties and workloads where appropriate.
Staff must not work under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs or misused medication. Anyone suspected of being unfit for work for these reasons will be stood down from duty and the situation investigated in line with company procedures.
Policy Review and Continuous Improvement
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes to our services, work methods or relevant legislation. We welcome feedback from employees and customers on any health and safety concerns or suggestions for improvement.
By working together and following the principles set out in this policy, Removal Van Battersea seeks to maintain high standards of safety and to deliver our removal services in a responsible and professional manner throughout our operating areas.
